Tohoku or Hokuriku in Winter? Two Onsen and Two Town Trips Compared

Tohoku and Hokuriku are too large to compare as two uniform winter regions. Coastal areas, inland basins, cities, and mountain onsen can experience different weather and require different transport.

This guide narrows the choice to two matched pairs:

  • Onsen trip: Yamagata Station + Zao Onsen vs Kurobe-Unazukionsen + Unazuki Onsen
  • Winter town: Kakunodate vs Kanazawa

Choose by the experience after arrival and the final car-free connection, not by a regional snow ranking.

Choose by Travel Goal

Snow Scenery: Compare Locations, Not Region Names

Tohoku and Hokuriku each contain multiple winter climate zones. “Tohoku is always deep snow” and “Hokuriku cities are always white” are both unsafe assumptions. Check the destination, not just the regional name.

Kakunodate: Keep a Walk That Works Without Snow

Kakunodate is suited to a focused walk between the station area and the historic district. Snow can add a distinct winter setting, but ice and snow-clearing conditions can extend walking time. Historical averages do not guarantee snow on your date.

Choose two or three stops rather than attempting a wide circuit, and return to the station or accommodation before darkness. Check the official Tazawako–Kakunodate tourism site for current opening information.

Kanazawa: Build a City Plan That Does Not Depend on Snow

Kanazawa combines gardens, historic districts, markets, craft and cultural facilities using walking and local buses. This creates alternatives when rain or heavy snow makes one outdoor area impractical.

Do not make city snow the only purpose. Move outdoor visits to the better-weather period and use indoor facilities when conditions deteriorate. The official Visit Kanazawa access guide provides transport information in English.

Onsen: Bus to Zao or Local Train to Unazuki

Yamagata + Zao Onsen

The Yamagata Shinkansen connects Tokyo and Yamagata, then a public bus reaches Zao Onsen in about 40 minutes. Yamako Bus provides an English guide.

Choose Zao when a mountain onsen and outdoor experience are the main purpose. The bus terminal, ryokan, public baths, and ropeway are not all in one place. Check wind and operating information for the ropeway separately from bath reception.

Kurobe-Unazukionsen + Unazuki Onsen

The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Kurobe-Unazukionsen, but the onsen town is not outside the Shinkansen gate. Walk to adjacent Shin-Kurobe and take the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazuki Onsen.

Choose Unazuki when continuing the railway journey is part of the experience. The JNTO destination guide describes about 150 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen and about 25 minutes on the local railway.

Food: Compare How a Meal Fits the Itinerary

Yamagata and Kakunodate

Central Yamagata, Zao Onsen, and Kakunodate have different restaurant density and closing times. Consider Yamagata noodles and regional dishes or Akita noodles and hot-pot dishes, but verify the actual restaurant and service period. At an onsen, decide whether dinner is included before assuming you can eat after the final bus.

Toyama and Kanazawa

At Unazuki, a ryokan meal may be the simplest choice. In Kanazawa, restaurants around the station, markets, and central districts provide more combinations. Seafood availability and price change with catch and supply, so confirm what the restaurant is serving rather than assuming a particular winter ingredient.

For international visitors, also check reservation method, language support, dietary accommodation, and payment. Do not allow dinner plans to risk the final bus or local train.

Travel from Tokyo and Onward Transport

Kurobe + UnazukiFastest to Kurobe-Unazukionsen about 2 hr 17 minTransfer walk + local railwayInclude the local-train wait and compare an overnight stay
KakunodateDirect Akita ShinkansenWalk or local transportA focused town walk can be short; add a night when continuing to an onsen
KanazawaHokuriku Shinkansen about 2 hr 30 minCity bus and walkingA day trip requires a limited area; a night adds evening and morning

These are approximate times from official tourism sources, not a timetable for a specific date. Recalculate with the JR schedule and local operator for your journey.

Rail Passes Do Not Cover Every Final Connection

A nationwide or regional JR pass may cover an eligible Shinkansen journey and reserved seat, depending on the pass. It generally does not turn a non-JR local bus, private railway, admission, or hotel pickup into a covered service. Verify each segment rather than calling the entire route “covered.”

Day Trip or Overnight?

A day trip works when you can keep the final connection short and choose one purpose: one part of Kanazawa, central Yamagata, or a focused Kakunodate walk. Continuing to Zao or Unazuki adds a bus or local railway in each direction.

Stay overnight when the onsen, ryokan dinner, evening, or next morning is part of the purpose. Compare the useful hours gained, not the room cost alone. See Winter Shinkansen: Day Trip or Overnight?.

Summary: Choose the Actual Itinerary

  • Choose Yamagata + Zao for a mountain onsen reached by public bus
  • Choose Kurobe + Unazuki for an onsen reached by local railway
  • Choose Kakunodate for one focused historic walking district
  • Choose Kanazawa for a city with indoor and outdoor alternatives
