What to Do When Snow Delays or Cancels Your Shinkansen
When snow disrupts a Shinkansen, do not begin by pressing the normal cancellation button. First identify the operating company, your exact train, the seller, and whether the ticket has been collected or used. A normal customer-initiated cancellation can be treated differently from disruption handling.
This page explains the decision process; it does not reproduce live train status. Always follow the operator, station staff, and the message shown in your own booking.
Check These in Order
- Operating company: open JR East Shinkansen status or JR West train status
- Exact booking: confirm the date, train name, number, and boarding/alighting stations
- Seller and ticket status: JR-EAST Train Reservation/eki-net, e5489, SmartEX/EX, a station, pass issuer, or travel agency; then confirm whether a paper ticket was collected or a gate was entered
- Remaining itinerary: check local trains, buses, hotel pickups, and the property separately
- Continue, change, or stop: choose only after both the replacement train and transport at the destination work
News and social media can alert you to a problem, but use the operator and seller for the procedure.
What Should You Do in Each Situation?
| Situation | First action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Snow forecast only | Check whether service is currently normal, your fare can be changed, and hotel/bus deadlines | Assuming a disruption refund has already been authorized |
| Possible or planned suspension announced | Match the affected route, date, section, and train with the message in your booking | Using the normal cancellation flow before checking whether your booking is covered |
| Train delayed but operating | Check estimated arrival, connections, and a safe return route from the destination | Deciding the refund amount from a predicted delay alone |
| Train cancelled throughout your booked section | Follow the seller’s disruption instructions and decide between another train and stopping the trip | Duplicating purchases or cancellation before checking for automatic processing |
| Journey interrupted after boarding | Follow station/train staff and ask about continuing, abandoning the trip, or returning | Leaving the paid area or discarding tickets before asking what evidence is needed |
“May be suspended” and “cancelled” are not the same. If you change plans while trains still operate, normal change or refund conditions may apply.
Delay and Cancellation Refunds Are Not the Same
Under the general JR guidance, when a Shinkansen or limited express arrives two hours or more late, the limited-express portion may qualify for a refund. This does not mean that the base fare, Green Car charge, or every part of a package is automatically refunded.
If a train is cancelled before travel and you abandon the trip, unused ordinary tickets are generally handled differently from a completed but delayed journey. Stopping partway, taking a later train, or returning to the origin each creates a different case.
The final eligibility, amount, deadline, and action depend on the product and how far you travelled. Keep tickets and booking records.
Procedures Differ by Seller and Ticket State
JR-EAST Train Reservation / eki-net and Shinkansen e-tickets
The JR-EAST Train Reservation disruption guide explains that some cancelled reservations are refunded automatically, while other cases require an online action, Contact Us, or station staff. The outcome varies by product and whether travel has started.
- Read the message attached to the affected reservation
- If a no-fee option is shown, follow that workflow rather than the normal one
- If a paper ticket has been collected, keep it and ask staff; online handling may no longer be available
- After entering the gate, staff may need to restore an unused status or record how travel changed
- A separately booked return or connection may not be cancelled automatically
e5489 or a Paper Ticket Bought at a Station
For JR West-area bookings and physical tickets, follow the booking record and ask at a staffed ticket office or a ticket machine with operator assistance when directed. Keep the paper ticket, receipt, and the card used for purchase. A self-service normal refund may charge a fee if the special disruption process should have been used.
SmartEX / Express Reservation
The SmartEX guide for delayed trains can display estimated times, a possible suspension, and whether the train has departed. During qualifying handling, a change may be possible based on the estimated departure time and a discount may sometimes carry over when the relevant message appears.
The displayed estimated time can change. Check the operator’s live information and station departure board as well as the app. A separate local train, hotel, or bus is not changed with the Shinkansen reservation.
Japan Rail Passes and Regional Passes
A pass is not the same product as a normal ticket or Shinkansen e-ticket. A cancelled reserved seat does not automatically create the same cash refund described for an ordinary limited-express ticket. Ask JR staff or the pass issuer how to change the reservation and whether the pass validity period or unused itinerary is affected.
Keep the pass, seat-reservation ticket, and any booking record. If your route uses a train or seat not fully covered by the pass, ask how the additional ticket is treated.
Travel Agency Packages
When the train and hotel are one package, the rail portion may not be cancellable on its own. Contact the agency or tour operator named in the contract. Do not assume that a JR station can decide the refund for the entire package.
Continue, Change, or Stop the Trip
Continue
Check not only the replacement train but also the final bus, hotel pickup, and check-in deadline. If the Shinkansen arrives after the final local connection, the itinerary does not work even though the main train operates.
Change the Time or Destination
Use this option when a replacement seat and the onward journey can both be secured. Discount products may limit the train or fare to which you can change. Preserve the original booking until the app or staff confirms the change.
Stop the Trip
Confirm the cancelled section, unused portion, and whether travel started. In a round-trip or multi-train booking, unaffected reservations may remain active unless you take a separate step.
Contact the Hotel, Bus, or Pickup Provider
Tell them:
- your estimated arrival time
- whether you will miss dinner or the final check-in time
- whether a reserved pickup can be moved
- how a same-day cancellation or no-show is handled
- whether transport back to the station is expected to operate the next morning
A railway cancellation does not automatically waive hotel cancellation fees. Contact the property instead of becoming a no-show.
Day-of-Travel Checklist
- Checked the official operator status for the exact route and section
- Confirmed the seller and whether the ticket was collected or used
- Read disruption instructions before cancelling
- Checked the local train, bus, and pickup separately
- Contacted the hotel with the expected arrival
- Kept tickets, receipts, payment card, pass, and booking number
- Identified an earlier return, backup hotel, or stopping point
