Shinkansen Green Car Guide

What exactly makes the Green Car so special? How much does it cost? We break down the differences and explain exactly how to ride the Shinkansen in luxury.

Is First Class Worth It?

1. What is the Green Car?

The “Green Car” is the premium, higher-class cabin available on Japanese bullet trains. The name stems from the historic dark green clover emblem that denoted first-class carriages decades ago.

4. How to Use the Green Car

The Boarding Process

  1. Select the “Green Car” (or First Class) option when purchasing digitally or at the machine.
  2. Pass through the standard Shinkansen ticket gates (there is no separate VIP gate).
  3. Walk down the platform to the designated Green Cars (Look for the green clover logo).
  4. Board the train. Green Car doors feature illuminated entryway thresholds.
  5. Find your massive seat and relax.

What You Can Do Inside

  • Eat bento boxes (completely acceptable).
  • Work securely with fast Wi-Fi and power.
  • Elevate the leg rest, dim the reading light, and sleep.
  • (Note: There is no longer complimentary food/drink wagon service in Tokaido Shinkansen Green Cars).

5. How to Book it for Cheaper

Smart EX “EX Green Early Bird” Fares

  • Massive discounts applied to Green Car seats booked entirely online.
  • EX Early Bird Green (3-Day): Save roughly ¥1,000-¥3,000 if booked 3 days out.

Sometimes cheaper than Ordinary

During promotional periods or utilizing the 21-day “Hayatoku” advance fare, you can ride the Green Car for a total price that barely exceeds a standard last-minute unreserved ticket. Always plan ahead.

6. Who Should Upgrade?

Travel ProfileWhy go Green?
Long Distances (2+ hrs)Zero physical fatigue upon arrival in Kyoto/Osaka.
Remote WorkersDedicated power, large tables, and immense elbow room so your neighbor doesn’t bump your laptop.
Honeymoons / VacationsHeightens the magic. Transforms transportation into a luxurious memory.
Light SleepersGreen Cars are famous for being dead silent. Very few children, no standing passengers in the aisles.

Treat yourself at least once

Foreign tourists are often blown away by the comfort of the standard cars, making them wonder why anyone would upgrade. Once you experience the plush leg-rest and silence of a Green Car crossing the countryside, it becomes very hard to go back.

7. FAQ

Q Where are the Green Cars located?
A On Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka) trains, cars 8, 9, and 10 are the Green Cars. Always check the departure board overhead signs.
Q Can I upgrade my ordinary ticket on the day?
A Yes, at a ticket machine or counter prior to departure. You cannot upgrade once boarded simply by sitting in empty Green seats (conductors carry tablets linking seats to tickets).
Q Are there A and E seats in the Green Car?
A Since it's a 2x2 layout, the seats are A & B (left) and C & D (right). If you want to see Mt. Fuji outbound from Tokyo, book Seat D.
Q Is there complimentary coffee?
A No. To optimize operations, the Tokaido Shinkansen terminated in-cabin food cart services. Buy all drinks and food at the station prior to boarding.
