The Kyushu Shinkansen has a reversed seat-side logic compared with the Tokaido and Sanyo lines, so picking the right side makes a big difference.

From Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo

1. Basics

The Kyushu Shinkansen connects Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo and is served by the Mizuho, Sakura, and Tsubame services. Because many sections run through tunnels, the best scenery can be brief and weather-dependent, but the route still offers excellent views of Aso and Sakurajima.

💡 Key point
On the Kyushu Shinkansen, Seat A is the mountain/east side and Seats E/D are the sea/west side, which is the reverse of the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen pattern.
For Aso and Sakurajima, the left side on southbound trains and the right side on northbound trains are usually the better choice.

Around Kumamoto Station, the broad Aso volcanic range can be visible on clear days, especially between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kumamoto.

Just before Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the train emerges from the tunnel and Sakurajima may appear briefly in the distance. It is a short but memorable window.

Unzen and the Sea of Ariake

On clear days, the sea and the distant volcanic range can appear between tunnels and overpasses, especially on the western side of the train.

3. Best seat choices

For Aso or Sakurajima, choose the left side on southbound trains and the right side on northbound trains.
For Unzen or the Sea of Ariake, the opposite side is often better.
Morning departures tend to offer clearer visibility and more stable views.

Because weather can change quickly, it helps to decide your preferred side before you reserve your seat.
