Note on Komachi Shinkansen (Akita Route)
When booking tickets north of Tokyo, you may also see the Komachi train.
- Coupled Operation: Komachi trains are coupled together with Hayabusa between Tokyo and Morioka. At Morioka Station, they detach and travel on the Akita Shinkansen branch line.
- All Reserved: Like Hayabusa, Komachi has no unreserved cars.
- 2+2 Seating Layout: Because Komachi uses narrower “mini-shinkansen” train cars (E6 series), ordinary cars feature spacious 2+2 seating rather than standard 2+3 seating.
- Recommendation: If your destination is along the Tohoku main line (Sendai, Morioka, Aomori), prioritize booking Hayabusa so seats on Komachi remain open for travelers heading into Akita.
